There are specific actions by Oscar make him suited for the title. The first chapter of this book describes Oscar's childhood and adolescent years in details. Once when he was seven years old, he dated two girls Olga and Maritza at once. However, his love life took a different turn from there on. As an adolescent, he was fat, unattractive and dorky.
Lola, his sister, tried to encourage him to lose weight so that he could get a girlfriend but Oscar did not heed her advice. When his friends found girlfriends, and he is left out, he began to feel like a loser. In the second chapter Lola and Belicia, their mother discovers she has cancer of the breast. She feels sad and powerless. She eventually runs away to go and live with her boyfriend, Aldo.
Lola lost her virginity to him. She called Oscar for his assistance, so Oscar came to her rescue and brought with him, their mother, aunt, and uncle to meet her up with her in a coffee shop.
Lola then gets back to Santo Domingo and begins to go to high school. She later met another boy Max Sanchez. In the next chapters, the story describes Belicia's past and how she experienced hardship La Inca saved her as a child. Later on, as an adult, a gangster almost killed her, he beat her and left her for the dead.
A golden mongoose, however, visited Belicia in the field that led her out of the field. In college Oscar fell in love with a Puerto Rican girl called Munoz Jenni, they spend much time together, but they never had sex. When Oscar discovers that Jenni has a boyfriend he is upset and attempts to take his life.
